“We live in a world that is not marked by blending into one large group but by many small niche groups living in close proximity. One image of America from the past that still persists is that the U.S. is a country of rugged individualism. And individuals we remain. People in America today struggle with relationships. In an age when people spend more time communicating via their computers than face-to-face, social groups are on the decline. People don’t join Civitan, Masons, or Kiwanis the way they once did. They may come together to work for a particular cause that interests them, but they aren’t joiners.” [56-57]
