C. Gene Wilkes is married to Kim (McHan) Wilkes (1975) and the father of two daughters, Storey Cook (Graham and granddaughter, Cambell) and Summer. He is the Pastor of Legacy Church, Plano, TX, where he has served since 1987. The church has transitioned during Gene's ministry to more effectively carry out its mission “to help people trust Jesus,” and to become “a mission outpost where every member is a missionary in his or her mission field.”

Gene is the author of Jesus on Leadership: Discovering the Secrets of Servant Leadership from the life of Christ. The workbook has been translated into Spanish and Mandarin. The trade book edition has been translated into four foreign languages, including Korean and Portuguese. Paul on Leadership: Servant Leadership in a Ministry of Transition is a journey with Paul through the pages of Acts as he followed Jesus’ call to take the Gospel to all ethnic groups.
Gene has also written My Identity in Christ. Gene published an inductive walk through the Old Testament with Clarity Press titled, Yahweh, Divine Encounters in the Old Testament. The second of Clarity’s three-volume series, Chirstos: God’s Transforming Touch, a study of the life of Jesus, was released in June, 2008. The third volume, Ekklesia: The Unstoppable Movement of God, will be released in June, 2009. Evangelism Where You Live: Engaging Your Community, a guide to community-based servant evangelism published by Chalice Press, was released in November, 2008.
Gene’s latest release is An Angel in the Flame: A Tale of Two Saviors and published by Leafwood Press. This is a “conversational commentary” on the life of Samson with an eye to Jesus, the Savior. Gene is a national conference speaker on the topics of spiritual gifts, lay mobilization, making disciples, and servant leadership. He has also led conferences and taught in Canada, China, Albania, Russia and Cuba. Gene received his Bachelor's degree (1975) from Baylor University (Greek and Religion majors) and his M.Div. (1979) and Ph.D. in New Testament Studies (1985) from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX.
Gene is a Resident Teaching Fellow for B. H. Carroll Theological Institute where he teaches New Testament, Leadership in Ministry, and Biblical Interpretation. He is also an adjunct professor in the Gary Cook Graduate School of Leadership at Dallas Baptist University in biblical servant leadership. He leads peer learning groups and coaches church leaders in the ministry of transition. He was a volunteer chaplain for the Plano Police and Fire Departments for over 10 years and served on the Plano Independent School District’s Diversity Advocacy Advisory Committee from 2006 to 2008.
Gene's hobbies are writing, cycling, and running. Gene began running seriously in 1999 and since has completed 12 marathons, several sprint triathlons, cycling races, including the HH100 three times, and several ultra marathons, including 50 kilometers, 50 miles and 100 miles.
